![]() We were apparently there for a tea ceremony and to try all these various teas of China. At that moment I thought."opps, maybe should not be here". This was all good until we walked into a small building, into a smaller room and sat down. I was so focused on listening to them I wasn't really paying attention to what we were doing. We were walking to this "event" only a few blocks away and there was one girl on one side and another on the other side.chatting, chatting chatting about everything. Because I liked these girls (who said they were from a smaller town but in Shanghai studying English) I went with them. They walked with me a bit and then said they were attending a cultural event, why didn't I join them. They tell you they also are traveling and have been some of the places you have been, they tell you how fortunate you are that you are from a country that allows you the freedom to experience the world, they commented on my blonde hair, blue eyes, white skin.all complementary, cheerful and chatty. where are you from, where have you been in China. Then when you walk over to return the camera, they engage you in conversation (in excellent English). It starts with two young people or a family asking you to take their photo.so of course you stop and take their photo. We get sucked in because they are friendly, non threatening and cheerful. They target westerners, likely those travelling alone. However, my caution goes to everyone in the high profile tourist areas. I was approached twice on Old Street in one day, then again twice next day but the only time I actually got sucked in was just off the Bund. I have traveled the world on my own and consider myself an experienced and savy traveler but I got sucked into this scam. Still, it was a good experience and worth a visit. So be careful when buying goods especially snacks etc. They managed to cover the best by dates of their snacks by packaging them in larger flowery bags so the dates are not visible from outside. Upon arrival in France, I was horrified to find that the goods have all passed their "best by dates"!!!!! I was really quite upset by this. I thought that it would make a nice present for people back home. We bought some chinese snacks from one of the shop in very nice packaging. ![]() They are above scolding you or even insult if you don't buy their goods. For those who wished to get some souvenirs, I would not recommend getting them here as prices were really quite high. The view at night was quite spectacular with lights on and the hustle bustle adds to experience of visiting something truly chinese. I went to Yuyuan old street with some friends last week. Ah and they will also ask you 6 times if you can speak Chinese just to be sure that they can speak with each other without you understanding.īut apart of this, Shanghai's very nice and you have to enjoy every bit of it !! ^^ I hope this is useful to you guys because I've had this situation and they really play it very well, specially cause they speak English so well, until you get in this room, which everyone expects a tea festival to be something big OUTSIDE. Every time they will tell a different story about them, one time they are teachers, one time they are a couple, one time there are brothers.ĭon't take it, they will bring you to three roads further and let you enter in a room where teas are served at VERY HIGH PRICES !! I still remember you had to take 6 teas of each 58 RMB, so in total 360 RMB per person, which is an awful lot of money for them. They will tell you that there is a CHINESE TEA FESTIVAL not so far from here. They will ask were you come from, say an easy phrase in your home language and start a whole conversation with you. They will ask you to take them a picture and there it all starts. There is a Chinese guy and a little Chinese Girl whom speak very good english. This is an important meeting point of tourists who are coming from Old Street. Then another VERY IMPORTANT TIP, there is a metro station close to Old Street called Yuyuan Garden. I bought one and broke after two times using it. ![]() A couple of tips here, don't buy SD-cards, the seem so so so SO real but they are not. ![]() There are a lot of shops where you can get your Haggling XP up. There is a museum which was one of the first builded temples in Shanghai. Old Street District in Shanghai is very beautiful, rather than the Shanghai you've seen so far, this is a bit of true China.
